Dome of the Rock

Dome of the Rock (Barquq, Old City, Jerusalem) – this octagon that dominates the Old City is a shrine for Islam’s third most holy site. The piece of black stone it covers is the mountain where Abraham tried to sacrifice Ishmael, the site of the Temple of Solomon, and the location from where Mohammed departed skywards toward heaven. The Dome, located on the Temple Mount, was completed by 691 AD, and, given its location, has survived all earthquakes so far.
